When buying a new ship, it is always a good idea to get your loadout sorted as soon as possible! The default layout is alright but is not the best you can get.
Erkul is a good site to know what can fit on your ship, where you can get it and have a shopping cart to keep track of what you need to get where.

A few basics for loadouts:
Weapons:
Laser repeaters (CF-117 bulldogs, CF-337 panthers, CF-447 Rhino), are used in 90% of PVP/PVE loadouts. They have good range, recharge quickly (no ammo required), fast firing and do a decent amount of damage. Gimbals should be avoided for two reasons, you can only mount a smaller size weapon on it and they aren’t as accurate. You should really be practicing your aim ! Gimbals are training wheels, we don’t do training wheels in TBAC!
Missiles:
With missiles you sometimes have the option to mount a different rack which makes you carry more missiles but of a smaller size. This is personal preference, but electromagnetic type missiles are best at this moment (they are banned in some of our events because they are a bit OP)
Shields:
This will always be the FR series (FR-66, FR-76, FR-86)
Powerplant:
This will always be the JS series(JS-300, JS-400, JS-500)
Coolers:
Has no use to change these, might change in the future.
Quantum drive:
For small ships Atlas drive, for medium ships XL-1 drive, for big ships TS-2 drive.
